A tour inside the history of Nora

Summer holidays in South Sardinia can offer you free time, relax and, why not, culture. Between a swim and a sunbath, a stop is obligatory at the Archaeological site of Nora, a few steps from the Hotel Baia di Nora. It’s enough one hour to explore, with a camera and comfortable shoes, this natural promontory that overlooks the beach and a lagoon. Phoenicians and Roman used it as a safe harbour but then the site was left to their own devices. The site was brought back to the top in the fifties of the latest century by Gennaro Pesce and today it is an archaeological park open to public.

Nora is considered as “the oldest city in Sardinia” and, according on what is written inside the oldest document discovered in the Mediterranean, the stele of Nora (currently guarded at Archaeological Museum of Cagliari), was founded by Norace, one of the most ancient and mythological heroes of Sardinia.

In this area, mosaics represent a great value; the remains are visible everywhere, in the houses, in the temple or also in thermal bath. Motif are different. In the middle of some there are a symbols with a different meaning. In the house with peristyle at the centre of Nora we can admire a mosaic with circular theme and stylised flowers. We can find others near to the forum, inside Roman Temple next to the theatre and in the small thermal bath and characteristic “Terme a mare”. We find the most evocative piece of art in the house with atrium tetrastyle. Around it there are several spaces with mosaic floor, for example in the “cubiculum” (a bedroom) with alcove which is recognisable from a rectangular mosaic different from the rest of the room.

You are led by expert guides and discover the history of this littles but wonderful piece of Mediterranean that, in the past, was the location of maritime and commercial trades since the seventh century a.c. but with proof dated back to the Nuragic civilization. We are sure that ancient people knew already the magical and rich of vital energy land like these. Approximately a thousand Italian and foreign people have reviewed this place on Tripadvisor with high marks. A tour on Archaeological site of Nora will add value to your holiday to Hotel Baia di Nora.
