Visit to Aquarium of Nora

A few steps from our Hotel and beyond the promontory of Capo di Pula is situated the Nora lagoon. Used it as natural harbour for its form since past time, whole area is rich of archaeological ruins left by Phoenicians, famous expert sailor people. In the middle of the 20th century lagoon was partially closed by an embankment to make a fish pond but recently whole area is grant to concession “Centro laguna di Nora” with the purpose to preserve this fragile ecosystem. Today we take you here because, it’s nice to lie on the sun but it’s always better to know what surround us.
The Nora lagoon Center manages the “Aquarium Mediterraneo”, the “Galleria Cetacei” and the “Centro recupero cetacei e tartarughe marine”. A different aquarium from the others where fish tanks are rich of multi-coloured tropical species. An aquarium when the research, the divulgation, the education, and care of cetaceans and turtles are put in the first place with ecology and respect for the environment. All species are unintentionally fished and, when they become too big to stay in the sea tank, will leave their space as well as invertebrate, starfish, sea urchin and sea anemone that are released after few months.
Open for the whole summer season, with guided tours from 11:30 to 18:30 (90 minutes is the average time to visit it), in the Aquarium you can see different rooms called “Sala delle specie” and “Sala degli ambienti”. The advantage to stay in a lagoon highlights the fragile ecosystem and the exchanges between lagoon and marine environment.
Between the areas, one of the most interesting is the Cetacean Gallery, where is possible to follow the evolution of cetacean up to their return at sea and discover their secret way to communicate. You’ll be accompanied by the song of whale and information plaques give you any necessary information.
The attention towards cetaceans has allowed to Aquarium to open the “Cetaceans and marine turtles recovery center” where, since 1993, they took care of this animal species recovered between Golfo di Cagliari and Arbus.
“Knowing the environment with intelligence, heart and hands”, it’s their slogan but it could become everyone’s.

Thanks for the photo of @alelonis that portrays a magnificent specimen of Caretta Caretta, welcomed, cured and then released into the wild from the Centro recupero cetacei e tartarughe marine.
